A Brief History
Years after the 2010 earthquake, Haiti is still feeling its devastating effects. You may recall the statistic that on January 12, 2010, over 300,000 people were killed, but did you know that thousands of people are still displaced?
In January of 2014, the Morijah Evangelical Church in Waltham, Massachusetts, acquired a piece of land in a region of Haiti where many children had no school to attend. This region is called Canaan. Nine months later, in October of 2014, a school was constructed, teachers were hired, and the school was up and running. By March of 2015, we were able to begin providing meals to the children, and by April of that same year they finished the construction of the new kitchen.
In July of 2017, we officially established Friends of Canaan as a nonprofit. The purpose of Friends of Canaan is to share the love of Jesus Christ with students at the Grace Evangelical School in Canaan, Haiti, by providing food, shoes, and school supplies.
